About penny fanjeaux
We are an anglo-french couple who lived for many years in the Paris region. We fell in love with the beautiful countryside of the Lauragais and the Pyrenees after exploring the region where my husband's ancestors came from. We have now retired and are living in a nearby village so we will be on hand to greet you and assist you if needed.
penny fanjeaux purchased this House in 2002
Why penny fanjeaux chose Villautou
The Villautou house has been our holiday home for several years. We had it renovated by an architect and would now like to share it with others. We feel it is a little paradise hidden in the hills that are both magical and relaxing. Walks going uphill from the village lead to spectaclar views of the Pyrenees. Numerous fields of sunflowers can be admired in the surrounding countryside in the summer and the wildlife is fascinating. At the same time just 10 minutes away is Mirepoix with its shops and restaurants and varied festivals thoughout the summer. We feel we have the best of both worlds.
What makes this House unique
The house being at the end of a row of 4 houses and on the edge of the village has a privileged position with panoramic views from south to west. The terraces and the garden with its pool are very private and you are not overlooked by anyone. Much of the charm of the property is thanks to its hillside position. The house and the terraces are on different levels and the hillside slopes down steeply from the garden. This also means that we don't feel the property is adapted to young children.

A perfect week in deepest France
The house is comfortable and beautifully equipped, the setting is wonderful, the pool is a joy. Penny and Jean-Noel are the perfect hosts, thoughtful and welcoming. We'll treasure the memory of our stay in Villautou.
A rural retreat away from it all
We spent a very enjoyable fortnight here. The house (especially the kitchen) is very well equipped and had everything we wanted. A nice swimming pool, great views of the countryside looking out from the back of the house and the garden. Villautou is a tiny hamlet, very quiet. The nearest shop is some way away - not a problem as far as we were concerned, but a point to be aware of. Penny and Jean Noel are the personification of kindness and helpfulness. We are so grateful to them for all the help they gave us when our car broke down and was unavailable for part of our holiday. If you like sightseeing, there is a good deal in the area to go and see, but you have to travel a bit to get to it.
Breathtaking location, amazing property, owners so lovely and helpful. Definitely recommend!
Just returned from a week stay at this gorgeous property in Villautou. The views are simply breathtaking; surrounded by gorgeous fields and even views of the Pyrenees on a clear day. The cottage was perfect in every way, very rustic, very French, very beautiful! As a family of four, the cottage met all of our needs in everyway. The kids loved the swimming pool; actually so did the adults. Very refreshing on a hot, sunny day and enough room to have a little swim and lots of fun in. How wonderful that there was an upper and lower terrace at the cottage where we could sit and relax and enjoy the views. The village of Villautou is very peaceful and only a short drive from the gorgeous town of Mirepoix, where there were plenty of cafes and restaurants where you can watch the world go by. Penny and Jean-Noel were there to greet us and explain everything to us, they kept in touch with us throughout our stay to check everything was ok. We can't thank them enough for their help and kindness. Our 11 year son said he'd give the holiday 10 out of 10 - can't do better than that! We would definitely return and highly recommend. Thank you to Penny and Jean-Noel.
Peaceful, charming and relaxing with lots of historical towns and villages to explore.
Came in August 2018 with husband and 2 boys aged 12 and 15. Temperatures were in the early 30s with only a couple of days rain which gave us the opportunity to drive out to Toulouse and Beziers. The chateau at Carcassonne is amazing, and just about every night there was a charming old town with bars and restaurants to visit, made easy with a car with built-in sat nav. The medieval town of Mirepoix is stunning, and wherever we went we were greeted so warmly by the French locals. The house is fully equipped and the two terraces offer stunning views of the rolling countryside and Pyrenees beyond. It is the last house in a tiny village of a handful of old shuttered houses in the most peaceful setting on a hill in the heart of the countryside. One morning I came out of the front door to be greeted by a baby deer. There are many flea markets on the weekend to visit; we visited Pamiers on the Sunday and came away with some great finds for our home and garden between 1 and 3 euros a piece. The market in Mirepoix is a must, but get there well before 10 for parking.
Penny and Jean-Noel are absolutely delightful and of course extremely knowledgeable about the area and any general advice; thank you so much Penny and Jean-Noel for a fantastic 2 weeks in your gorgeous holiday home! Xx
The house was lovely, stunning views and a delightful setting.
A relaxing few days with great weather to enjoy. Sitting on the patio with the views of the countryside and the distant Pyrenees was a delight. Visits to the local towns and villages, Mirepoix, Foix and Fanjeaux were a treat, and further afield to Carcassonne. We didn't try any restaurants as we couldn't drag ourselves away from the enjoyment of eating outside and admiring the surroundings.
Beautiful cottage in stunning peaceful location
A gorgeous place if you are looking for rural beauty with peace & quiet but with a lively town only 6 miles away. The hosts, Penny & Jean-Noel are so helpful & provide a beautiful welcome basket of wine & food. The outside space at the cottage was perfect for us with a lovely pool, stunning views & fabulous sunsets.
Villautou is a small and friendly village with a church and townhall. There are no shops but a 10 minute drive across some beautiful countryside will take you into Mirepoix where you will find everything you need, supermarket, shops and plenty of restaurants and cafés in the medieval centre.
Pamiers, the largest town in the Ariege, is 25 minutes away.
Carcassonne is 45 minutes away and Toulouse just under an hour.
