About Gareth Tuckwell
We live in Kent but our heart lies in Cwmystwyth! We visit as often as we can and love our two adjoining cottages as if they were our own permanent homes. Ty Mari has been in the family since 1969. We have steadily improved it over the years. Penroc has been in the wider family since 1974. In 2006 it was completely refurbished and extended to include a large balcony and panoramic living area below. There is a soundproofed intercommunicating door between the cottages. We have full lives and just love to go to these cottages to unwind and enjoy complete 'away from it all' peace. Four generations of our large family have enjoyed the cottages too!
Gareth Tuckwell purchased this Cottage in 1969
Why Gareth Tuckwell chose Aberystwyth
In 1969 Gareth's mother was dying and had £2000 to leave to her 2 sons. Amazingly we were able to buy Ty Mari for that amount and have been improving the property year by year. Gareth bought his brother's share in 1984 and together we were able to take out a mortgage and buy the adjoining cottage in 2006. The cottages are now owned by our children but Gareth still runs the lettings. Having a large family, we thought it best to open up sound-proofed door so the cottages now interconnect internally. That works brilliantly and the cottages are let separately or as one, when 10 people can stay in comfort. Do note that by booking Ty Mari or Penroc alone, you do not have access to the other cottage. We feel better as soon as we start the 4 1/2 hour drive from Kent to Cwmystwyth! The sheer beauty and 'away from it all' peace of the Ystwyth valley is so restoring. After 50 years, we are still discovering new walks!
What makes this Cottage unique
The cottages are in the village of Cwmystwyth yet the quietness of the place is overwhelming. Just the sheep and the river down below break the stillness. On a clear night you will probably see more stars than ever before because of the darkness outside and the lack of light pollution. That can become a life-long memory. You can walk for miles from the door, climb a hill nearby to see the sea, exercise dogs safely in the surrounding forests, go cycling, riding, fishing or just learn to 'be'! The Garden Room is a wonderful feature for those staying in Ty Mari. A real 'place apart' with heat, comfort and a view to die for! We greatly enjoy having one of the cottages to ourselves and inviting friends to stay in the adjoining cottage. That way we all get some space but also have great times together. Should you be looking for a place to 'party' with friends with late night noise, then we would ask you to book Penroc as well so no-one is disturbed. If you contact Gareth who manages the bookings, a discount can be arranged when booking both cottages together.

Superb hideaway in the Welsh mountains
Instructions to find and enjoy the property were excellent. Facilities and cleanliness were 10/10. Lovely garden room and outdoor space overlooking the valley. Surrounding hills are a splendid backdrop. Just be aware that this is two properties to let and the site photos are of both, so only some apply to the property you are renting. However nothing adverse about 'Penroc' and we would definitely stay again.
John, thanks so much for this encouraging review. I have since been through our HomeAway pages to make sure there is real clarity on each property. On our Welsh Hideaways site I have put up a photo of each room showing which are in Ty Mari and which are in Penroc. That was such helpful feedback. We so hope to welcome you again one day.
Lovely cottage retreat
We enjoyed our stay at the Welsh Hideaway Cottage. The views are fabulous and the cottage was very comfortable.
Thanks so much for taking time to write a review. We so love our guests discovering the beauty of this area in the heart of Wales, especially when you had traveled a few thousand miles to stay at Welsh Hideaways! Very best, Gareth
Couldnt ask for anything better
Better than expected. Good value. Great place to stay, and location with a nice view. Whether you're with family or friends, its the place for you. Perfection at its finest.
Thanks so much, Mohammed, for giving time to writing a review. We so want people to discover and enjoy the beauty of the Cambrian uplands and be based on a cost comfy cottage like Welsh Hideaways.
We had the most wonderful stay in Ty Mari. The sun shone, and we saw lots of birds and wildlife, including red kites, a fox and lots of woodpeckers. The cottage is really cosy, and has everything you could want. The beds are really comfortable - we slept so well. The Hafod Arms Hotel was great for dinner. We highly recommend a visit to Ty Mari. Our only regret was that we didn't stay longer!'
Thank you so much for this great review and for leaving Ty Mari looking beautiful. We would love to welcome you back one day. Only 12,000 miles to travel! Very best, Gareth

Fantastic break with the family!
The cottage was clean and tidy, a great little hideaway with some fantastic walks in the area, the weather was also pleasant which made all the difference, it was great to come back to the cosy cottage after a long day exploring with the children and dogs.
Would definitely recommend and will be staying again.
Thanks so much for taking time to review. Yes we have had great times there with children always wanting to go back there to explore and enjoy. Dogs seem very content there too!
