These attractive possibly 17th Century cottages are seventeen miles inland from Aberystwyth along a mountain road and although off the beaten track there are neighbours so there is not complete isolation. The Ystwyth valley is one of the RSPB's successful breeding sites for red kites and there is fishing, and pony trekking nearby along with wonderful cycle tracks. Sandy beaches are just over half an hour away and there is a narrow gauge railway from Devil's Bridge to Aberystwyth. The area is one of the most beautiful in mid-Wales and there are glorious walks along by the river with spectacular waterfalls at times. The river is just three minutes walk from the cottages. Devil's Bridge Falls, three miles from the village is a famous tourist attraction. The cottages are cosy and extremely comfortable at all times of year. A detached heated garden room for those staying in Ty Mari has glorious views. Family games in front of the fire, or sitting in the window seat with a good book and red kites circling overhead soon recharge the batteries. Heating is night storage but the gas-burning stoves make each cottage warm enough even in deep winter and are lovely to sit around. The windows are double-glazed and furnishings are to a high standard. Downstairs there is one large room in each cottage with a kitchen area along one wall, a dining area and a cosy living area around a stove. There is a good selection of books, puzzles and games in both cottages. The local store at Pontrhydygroes sells essentials. Newspapers and alcohol are on sale in Devil's Bridge Easter to October and in Ponterwyd through the winter months..
For both cottages sheets and towels are changed weekly at your request and they are fully serviced on your departure. The garden area is shared between the two cottages, Ty Mari's front door leads onto a track between cottages off the mountain road.

About Gareth Tuckwell
We live in Kent but our heart lies in Cwmystwyth! We visit as often as we can and love our two adjoining cottages as if they were our own permanent homes. Ty Mari has been in the family since 1969. We have steadily improved it over the years. Penroc has been in the wider family since 1974. In 2006 it was completely refurbished and extended to include a large balcony and panoramic living area below. There is a soundproofed intercommunicating door between the cottages. We have full lives and just love to go to these cottages to unwind and enjoy complete 'away from it all' peace. Four generations of our large family have enjoyed the cottages too!
Gareth Tuckwell purchased this Cottage in 1969
Why Gareth Tuckwell chose Ystrad Meurig
In 1969 Gareth's mother was dying and had £2000 to leave to her 2 sons. Amazingly we were able to buy Ty Mari for that amount and have been improving the property year by year. Gareth bought his brother's share in 1984 and together we were able to take out a mortgage and buy the adjoining cottage in 2006. The cottages are now owned by our children but Gareth still runs the lettings. Having a large family, we thought it best to open up sound-proofed door so the cottages now interconnect internally. That works brilliantly and the cottages are let separately or as one, when 10 people can stay in comfort. We feel better as soon as we start the 4 1/2 hour drive from Kent to Cwmystwyth! The sheer beauty and 'away from it all' peace of the Ystwyth valley is so restoring. After 47 years, we are still discovering new walks!
What makes this Cottage unique
The cottages are in the village of Cwmystwyth yet the quietness of the place is overwhelming. Just the sheep and the river down below break the stillness. On a clear night you will probably see more stars than ever before because of the darkness outside and the lack of light pollution. You can walk for miles from the door, climb a hill nearby to see the sea, exercise dogs safely in the surrounding forests, go cycling, riding, fishing or just learn to 'be'! The Garden Room is a wonderful feature for those staying in Ty Mari. A real 'place apart' with heat, comfort and a view to die for! We greatly enjoy having one of the cottages to ourselves and inviting friends to stay in the adjoining cottage. That way we all get some space but also have great times together.

Cozy cottage in a beautiful setting
Ty Mari is a quaint cottage in a beautiful rural setting. We enjoyed the comfortable, inviting setting of the cottage. We also were able to take some walks in the area and enjoyed the serenity of the location. The cottage is kept clean and had the amenities we needed for our stay. We also appreciated the friendliness of the groundskeeper. I highly recommend.
Thanks SO much for taking time to write a review. We so want our guests to have a great time and to enjoy the stunning, largely undiscovered Cambrian mountains. We feel we have stepped off the world when we get there and begin to slow down!
The cottage is charming and the location is idyllic. Great walks from the door. We walked for hours without seeing anyone. When you do meet people they are very friendly and willing to chat. Would really recommend it.
