Cottage in Porlock, Exmoor National Park, Somerset, England, Log burner, 4 poster, sleeps 1-8 + cot. Ideal for exploring Exmoor's beautiful coast & countryside
About Jacquie Haylett
My mother purchased the property in the early 1980s and initially rented out the ground floor as a 1 bedroom apartment. When she was admitted to nursing home care we fully refurbished and redecorated the whole property to enable it to become a beautiful holiday home. Having been brought up on Exmoor I love to return to stay in the house with my family as often as time allows, we therefore love the house not only as a holiday cottage but also as our own home.
Why Jacquie Haylett chose Porlock
Spacious comfortable accommodation. Breathtaking sea views. Ideally situated in a peaceful but central location in the picturesque village of Porlock. Perfect base for exploring Exmoor National Park, with beautiful coast and countryside walks from our doorstep. Traditional thatched country pub close by.
What makes this Cottage unique
The views from the upstairs of our accommodation across Porlock Bay are magnificent. In clear weather you can view right across the sea to Wales, and often watch hang gliders from the lounge window who take off from Hurlstone Point. The charming traditional village of Porlock is very friendly with a strong community spirit and hosts many events to suit all ages throughout the year. Dogs are welcome in many establishments and there are numerous walks directly from our doorstep. There is a good selection of traditional English pubs, restaurants and shops close by. Exmoor is home to a wide variety of wildlife including red deer and Exmoor ponies. Lots of outdoor activities close by including kayaking; cycling; horse riding; fishing, coasteering, etc, but equally you can just relax and unwind in peace and tranquility. The beautiful scenery inspires artistic creativity.

Dear Lucy, we very much appreciate the time you have taken to write this review and for your recommendations. We are delighted that you enjoyed our house, as well as Porlock which is such a charming village. We hope we can tempt you back to stay with us again before too long! Jacquie
I cannot fault the property in any way. A true home from home and an ideal base to explore this beautiful part of the country.
Every possible need has been anticipated and catered for. I would truly recommend to anyone and everyone.
A delightful stay in an ideal location
From start to finish this has been a delightful experience, enabling us to have our whole family together to celebrate a special birthday for our daughter. The house is almost perfect for a group of up to 8 adults and is very well equipped. The location is just a few minutes walk from the centre of Porlock but is peacefully quiet with lovely sea views. As we are all musicians a bonus was to find a piano in the upper lounge, although I believe the owner would prefer it only to be used by those who will care for it.
For February, the weather was very kind and we enjoyed some great moorland walks and visits to places of interest, including Dunster Castle. Probably due to the time of year a few places were closed in Porlock, such as the Fish and Chip shop and the Cheese Shop. However, the SPAR is a great little general store with lots of local produce.
The owner, Jacquie, has been very responsive to all questions and has done a lot to ensure visitors enjoy their stay. Heartily recommended.
Many thanks Terry for taking the time to write a review. We are delighted that you all enjoyed the special birthday celebrations and I am delighted that the piano proved to be popular - I always love a party so if I had known there was music and a party going on I might have been tempted to gate crash!! I am pleased you weather was kind to you and you were able to venture out on to the beautiful Exmoor moorlands, and that you discovered medieval Dunster with its beautiful castle. There are some great shops and restaurants there too. We hope we can tempt you back to stay with us again in the not too distant future so you can discover more of the many gems that Exmoor has to offer
Lovely comfortable and roomy house for a family weekend.
Clean, warm, well furnished, lovely beds, great views from the top floor. We all loved it! Thank you Jacqui and her caretaker. We were 7 adults, oldest 86 yrs, and twin babies of 8 weeks. Suited is perfectly. Porlock sooo pretty for Xmas too..we will be back next year..
Many thanks for taking the time to write a review. We are delighted you all loved your weekend with us in Porlock and we will be delighted to welcome you back in 2019. I hope you managed to spot some of the Porlock Santas dotted around the village - Porlock Santa Festival always makes me smile!
Great family and friends week away
We had a brilliant time at this property. Although Porlock is very small, there are some great pubs and this house is centrally positioned to enjoy Porlock and the surrounding area. The housekeeping team met us on arrival as we had a shopping delivery come just before arrival time - this was very flexible of them and they were very welcoming. The house seems huge and it’s great to have a separate laundry room when you have four small kids with you. The arrival goodies were appreciated- my son loved the sponge cake and wanted it for breakfast! We found the rooms to be comfortable and spacious. For people travelling with small children it is good to know that the house has a cot, high chair and plenty of stair gates. There is a well-stocked toybox and a piano to entertain. Our youngest boy loved playing with the little tykes car in the garden. We hope to return.
We very much appreciate the time you have taken to write a review to share your experience with our guests. I am delighted that you all enjoyed your holiday, had the opportunity to explore the village and enjoy the local pubs and that your children enjoyed playing with the toys. Our utility room has recently been extended and updated and is proving very popular with our guests giving extra space for laundry facilities and a very useful area for wet dogs to dry off!
We look forward to welcoming you back to stay with us in 2019.
