Charming Waterfront Cottage w Private Beach, Sunsets On Water, and Pet Friendly
I'm the lucky manager of Gwynn's Island Cottage who enjoys introducing guests to the Cottage, Gwynn's Island, Mathews County, and the surrounding areas on Virginia's spectacular Chesapeake Bay.
CLewis purchased this Cottage in 2015
Why CLewis chose Gwynn
People like family introduced me to Mathews County decades ago. Friends introduced me to Gwynn's Island, a true slice of heaven.
What makes this Cottage unique
The breathtaking view of Hills Bay and the Chesapeake beyond, with frequent sighting of blue herons, bald eagles, swans, osprey, bufflehead ducks and dolphins, with boating life and sunsets over the water. Our Shed where guests can take bikes to explore the island, use kayaks, a paddleboard, crab pots and nets, beach chairs, rafts, a croquet set, pup tent, grilling supplies, and more. The Cottage's private beach, a perfect place for guests to lounge, launch a kayak or paddleboard, enjoy adult beverages, swim, crab, fish, or start a sand pit fire. Gwynn's Island, with Revolutionary War historic and natural beauty, where you slow down and maybe step back in time as soon as you can cross the bridge. <EXHALE....> Mathews County, with more shoreline than any other County in Virginia, although it's the second smallest geographically. From the Cottage, guests can visit the idyllic water towns of Urbanna, Kilmarnock, Irvington, historic Gloucester and Yorktown including the Battlefield, or even historic Jamestown or Colonial Williamsburg, both only an hour away.

Loved our stay at this well appointed, clean, well stocked, spacious little cottage on the bay. Dog friendly with astounding views of sunset, water, and wildlife this place did not disappoint. It was perfect for an older working couple, who needed some peace and quiet in a beautiful place with their dogs, who where content to explore the history of the area, eating at some of the great local restaurants and ice cream shops, or just staying home and catching the lovely breezes off the bay and reading or doing jigsaw puzzles. Thank you for this little peice of paradise. We will return one day!
Cathy - So glad you enjoyed your time at the Cottage as your respite from work and things more hectic. We look forward to having you back again.
Best vacation we have had in years
My husband and I had the best time staying in our cottage we absolutely loved everything about it from fishing, crabbing , enjoying the beach, seeing dolphins, deer and even a little fox. We steamed crabs and fried fish and even made a few trips to island Seafood Company for Barbra’s crab cakes. We can’t wait to stay at the cottage again
My husband and I along with our toddler and dog had a fantastic time at Gwynn's Island Cottage. First let me say that the manager went above and beyond, was super fast with responses and a complete joy to work with. The cottage was awesome and you can't beat the privacy. It is off the main road into the island but you can't tell from the back yard/beach. This location is perfect for those looking for privacy. We had an incredible time on the private little sandy beach on the property. As well, as enjoyed using the kayaks from the shed. We used the crab pot and had a fresh batch of crabs 3 of our 7 nights. We loved the adorable crab platter for our meals and the kitchen is well stocked. We took a day trip to the little town of Matthews and shopped some of the little shops. Everyone was super friendly. Most days we hung out on our own beach. You have to appreciate not having to pack and carry your stuff to and from the beach. Just rinse off in the outdoor shower (which was an awesome experience of its own) and go inside for lunch. We ate at; Richardson's Cafe (delicious fried oysters and to die for beet salad) White Dog Bistro (everything! crab puppies!) Southwind Pizza (yummy pizza) Hole in the Wall (good crab cakes and raw oysters) Merrior Tasting Room (incredible raw oysters!) oh, don't forget to stop at Island Seafood for some Rivah dip and other treats from the sea. We enjoyed watching the osprey's dive into the bay and carry out a fish and had the pleasure of a big blue heron visiting us twice during the week. Would definitely recommend for those who desire a quaint, comfy and private location. Looking forward to our next stay here. PS. don't forget your sunscreen and bug spray. If your thinking of staying here, DO IT! you won't be disappointed.
Thanks so much for your detailed review and most of all for taking advantage of everything the Cottage and Mathews has to offer. We welcome you back any time.
We love the private beach and the wonderful sunsets! Great location to get away from it all.
Margaret - I am so grateful that your family chooses to come back to the Cottage for your summer vacation each year. Many thanks.
Beautiful relaxing family getaway
We had a great trip with our two young children and two dogs. The home was perfect for our small family, and it had everything we needed. The paddle boards and Kayaks were fun and we used them everyday. The convenience of having our own private beach so close to the house is amazing with young children. When they needed a break from the beach they could just walk right back to the house with us still sitting in the sand. We only left the house one day to go to Busch Gardens which was less than an hour away and had a great time. We cooked in or ate at The Hole in the Wall Restaurant right down the street located on the island. We had great crab cakes from the seafood store located on the island, and caught a few of our own crabs.
The views from the house over the bay are amazing. I honestly can't say enough good things about our trip. We all loved it, and it was so relaxing. My only possible suggestion would maybe be a fire ring for sitting outside in the evening. Other than that the house and location really had everything we could ask for. Thanks for sharing your cottage with us.
Lauren - Thank you and wow! Your family took full advantage of what the Cottage can offer to our guests. Impressed that you crabbed, got seafood at Island Seafood and ate at Hole in the Wall, and got in a visit to fun Busch Gardens. We've considered a fire pit and it's on the list. Once guests sent me a picture of a sand pit fire they made down on the beach! Thanks for the review and for the suggestion and hope to have you back again at the Cottage.
My stay was amazing as always. Relaxing by the water and having my meals with a beautiful view. Hoping to come back same time next year . I could ask for a better vacation and a wonderful host who made it so prefect.
Thanks Susan! We appreciate great repeat guests like you that make managing the Cottage a pleasure. Look forward to booking your stay next year whenever your schedule allows.
Gwynn's Island Cottage is located on Hills Bay which meets the great Chesapeake Bay within view of the Cottage.
The Cottage looks across Hills Bay to Deltaville and Fishing Bay Yacht Club so guests enjoy boats on the water almost year-round. The Cottage faces northwest, affording guests beautiful sunset views over the water from the deck, yard and beach.
The Cottage's excellent location is close to nearby idyllic water towns on the Bay and Rappahannock River such as Deltaville, Urbanna, Kilmarnock, White Stone, Irvington, and Gloucester.
Gwynn’s Island is rich in history and natural beauty. Legend says that a Native American princess (possibly Pocahontas) is said to have almost drowned in the waters off the Island and was saved by Hugh Gwin, the island’s namesake, to whom the island was given in thanks by her father.
The Island was the site of the Battle of Cricket Hill, an important Revolutionary War battle, and is home to an interesting Museum. The Island has a public marina for guests with boats only 1/3 mile from the Cottage, and charter boats are available just across the bridge from the Island.
The Island and Mathews County are known for excellent fishing, bird watching, sea life including dolphins, crabs, stingray, boating activities, and water sports.
The Cottage is just 3 miles from “downtown” Mathews which was voted the #5 Coolest Town in America in 2014. There you will find restaurants, interesting shops, historic structures, grocery shopping, a library, and a farmer’s market on Saturday mornings 7 months a year.
Other nearby destinations include Yorktown Battlefield, where the freedom of our nation was assured, Colonial Williamsburg (with Busch Gardens Theme Park and Water Country USA), and Historic Jamestown Settlement.
