About Laura Smales
Laura Smales has managed Thornton Farm Cottages since 2009. We are a small family run organic arable farm near Berwick-upon-Tweed. Our family have lived here since 1948 so we know the area pretty well!
Why Laura Smales chose Berwick-upon-Tweed
Wagtail is private, newly modernised and has a lovely big garden with donkeys for neighbours. The cottages were originally farm worker cottages and have as such look small from the outside but offer loads of space internally. It's cosy for two but spacious enough for a family of six.
What makes this Cottage unique
We love Cheswick Sands or walking our dogs round the fields on the farm. You can spot deer or any of 51 species of birdlife. Our farm has won prizes for Environmental Stewardship.

Very quiet location surrounded by farmland. Well equipped and furnished property. Lots to do near by and a good choice of eating out locations. Lovely fresh eggs - hen and duck! We will be back!
Lovely well equipped cottage
We had a wonderful 4 night stay in the cottage. Very warm comfortable and really well equipped - particularly comfortable beds and bedding etc. Lovely fresh eggs on arrival which was a bonus. Easy parking and a nice private garden. All the mod cons and decent wi fi to keep the teens happy. Quiet peaceful location not far from Berwick and the coast and a fabulous pub up the road - the Plough on the Hill - well worth a visit!
Wonderful (and warm) country retreat
We arrived on Monday afternoon and found the property lovely and cosy. It is very well appointed and had everything we needed including bottle opener, malt vinegar and dog bowl to mention only a few. We went to investigate the area - the nearest pub (The Plough on the Hill) is about 1.5 miles away up a very steep hill and is shut on a Monday night. It was however open on Thursday and we had a wonderful meal there. We also took a drive down to The Salutation but it was also shut on Monday. The cottage is very rural but this has its advantages as it was really quiet and only about 5 minutes drive from the A1 so we managed to visit lots of the local area. We would recommend a walk round the wall at Berwick upon Tweed and also a visit to Lidisfarne. We had lunch at The Barn at Beal, the menu is quite limited but the fish and chips is awesome! I would definitely recommend the cottage and think it would be suitable for families as it has a lovely enclosed garden and good working WiFi. There’s a good circular route - about 2.5km - for dog walking too with lots of wild life and birds to see. The owner Laura visited us on the first evening, gave us a few pointers regarding local amenities, made sure we were settled and understood how everything worked. She was also available during the week and delivered extra eggs on request as they were so fresh and delicious. All in all a great place.
Thank you very much for your fantastic review. I would also recommend a walk around Berwick Walls. The Barracks, Gymnasium Gallery and the Louvre Ice Cream Kiosk are all highlights!
We very much hope to welcome you back some time. It was a pleasure to have you to stay at Wagtail.
Best wishes, Laura Smales (Thornton Farm Cottages)
Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Cottage was lovely.
Enjoyed the peace and quiet but plenty of places to visit locally. Lovely county and really friendly people. Highly recommend a stay here.
Beautiful, comfortable cottage
We have just returned from a lovely week at this really nice cottage . It is finished to a very high standard and Laura left us fresh eggs , milk and a bottle of fizz which was greatly appreciated. Had a very relaxing time with our family and even the dog didn’t want to come home! Thanks again Laura.
Wonderful stay at Wagtail!
Beautiful cottage - immaculately kept. Lovely and peaceful area, you'd never know you were staying near a farm! Laura is very hospitable and couldn't have done more to make our stay comfortable :) We'll be going back!
Thank you so much for staying with us, I am glad you enjoyed your holiday at Wagtail Cottage. We now have a picnic table and bench in the garden where you can enjoy the view over the fields and chat to the donkeys.
