About Susanna and Michael Foley
It was a cold wet rainy day in England and we were flicking through the Sunday papers when this great article shone out on Apulia, the land that time forgot, we were hooked. I am a builder and was working in London and my wife Susan was in the film industry, too much work and not enough play. So we started to read up on Puglia and we came on holiday, as much as possible, there is something infectious about the area and the people and we started to feel very disappointed every time we left. We decided to look for a holiday home, we'd really managed to pin point the area that we wanted to live in after travelling the length and breath of the region, on lots more holidays, (we don't stint on the research). So finally after a lot of house hunting we fell in love with a renovated Trulli, (the wonderful dome shaped dwellings that the area is so famous for, which most people tend to gravitate towards when they come to this region.) It was on a hill top surrounded by forest and with olive groves and vineyards stretching as far as the eye could see. It was breathtaking and we were ecstatic. This was 15 years earlier in 2003 and we have been living 'la Dolce Vita' ever since
Susanna and Michael Foley purchased this Chateau / Country House in 2017
Why Susanna and Michael Foley chose Cisternino
Because, this Trullo has been carefully restored and furnished according to tradition without neglecting comfort and refinement. Built with our own hands, loved and carefully refined, to make a luxury home. We have been working on renovating houses in Puglia now for many years and this particular Trullo is exceptional. Not long ago not many people knew about these trullI homes, in the deep south of Italy, but this rural building, that is made with dry-stone walls and conical roofs, which is whitewashed and topped by magical spires. really does make for a once in a lifetime holiday, its so completely unique and unforgettable, but entirely humble and natural. if going back in time, doing something unusual, different maybe, experiencing a slow calm, gentle lifestyle amongst nature and in a picturesque landscape, surrounded by charming local friendly people, culture, food and family time. If this is what your looking for then Trullo di Luce is the place for you.

Unique stay in the middle of an olive grove. Kids enjoyed the pool.
Great place to spend your vacation.
The most amazing trip!
We absolutely loved our week in Puglia. The property was fabulous, the views stunning and Susan made it so easy to communicate and gave us great ideas of places to visit. The villa is in a great location to visit many towns and beaches in the area.
The villa is well equipped and the decor is lovely. Pool and outdoor area is also great and we stayed in on a few nights and used the BBQ after a day of exploring.
You will need a car to get around as with every villa in Puglia but we would also highly recommend the driver Marco (who Susan gave us the number of) for those evenings when you want to drink a little more wine.
Thank you again for a great week. The only negative was that we didn't stay for longer!
Thank you so much, what lovely comments. It was such a pleasure to meet you all.
Rustic elegance in Cisternino
Overall we really enjoyed our stay in Cisternino. The property is lovely, the interior design very tasteful, and the recommendations of places to eat from the hosts were spot on. Rustic elegance seems to describe the property well. Rustic, because there is no potable water on the property. This was a surprise to us as it is not listed anywhere in reviews or description of the property. While it was not a terribly big deal, and there are valid reasons the property can't have it, it seems that it should have been included in the description, and the price compensated a bit for this. You also have to flip a switch to turn on the hot water heater when you need to have a hot shower. Again, not a huge deal, but a bit more rustic than we expected for the price. Elegance, for lots of reasons. The olive groves, trullis, cool appliances, excellent pool and outdoor spaces. It is located in a perfect spot for day trips to surrounding towns and beaches.
The 4/5 stars is mainly for some inaccuracies in the description of the property given the price (potable water, manual hot water heater, no A/C in one bedroom, and only 1 bidet when 2 were listed).
Thank you for your lovely review. Yes all houses in southern Italy have no drinking water, apart from those that are in the centre of cities. Most of our guests prefer to drink bottle water anyway as they wouldn’t want to drink foreign water. The brand new boiler is brilliant, the small button in the upstairs, is simply to bring boiling water to you immediately, super advanced for southern Italy, or you can just let the water run like all normal houses. So sorry for my simple mistake with accidentally adding a bidet I will amend it immediately.
Wonderful holiday in an amazing setting
The house was beautiful, immaculately presented, thoughtfully equipped and in the most wonderful setting. Susanna and Michael were incredibly helpful and gave us some brilliant recommendations for local restaurants and places to visit. We thoroughly enjoyed our week lounging by the lovely pool in such a peaceful setting and would highly recommend this very special house.
Hilary what a delight to meet you and your family. Thank you so much for your kind words they are greatly appreciated
Fantastic holiday in beautiful Trullo
Highly recommend this Trullo - beautifully decorated and lovely pool. We had been to Puglia before so didn’t do much exploring this time, except for a visit to Monopoly, but location was great. Most days spent chilling by pool with daily visit to local supermarket which had everything we needed for long leisurely lunches. Every evening we went into Cisternino for supper and found great restaurants. Booking process and any queries we had were quickly responded to. Only problem was we wished we could have stayed longer! Hopefully we will return. Thank you for making our holiday so special!
Beautiful Puglia Experience
The Trullo was terrific! Tastefully decorated and well outfitted. The hosts were super responsive. Great central location to Puglia villages and Adriatic Sea. Cisternino is a wonderful village with terrific restaurants and a few minute drive. Highly recommend.
Doug great to meet you and thank you for your kind words
The Orange Flag flies over Cisternino. The Touring Club of Italy awards this recognition of excellence in environmental tourism, to small inland towns that offer excellent products and quality hospitality. Cisternino enjoys easy accessibility so you can explore the historic centre on foot. The ancient heart of town is a whitewashed citadel, similar to that of it neighbouring City-Ostuni. Also worth savouring are the town's many typical food products.
Porta Grande is the most important gateway to Cisternino's historic heart. Walking on “chianche” that have been polished smooth by centuries' worth of footsteps, visitors enter the closely-woven urban fabric, whose medieval aspect has remained virtually intact. Follow the street that leads from Porta Grande past the spacious Piazza Vittorio Emanuele and its lovely Clock Tower to Porta Piccola. Alternatively, dive into the authentic atmosphere of the four districts known as “Bère Vécchie,” “Scheledd,” “u Pantène,” and “L’ìsule.” These neighbourhoods, together with the outer one of “u Bùrie,” compose a small maze of streets in which whitewashed houses alternate with stairways, loggias, arches, and alleyways lined with geraniums. Full of restaurants, bars, pizzerias, osterias, pubs and every possible type of entertainment playing out in the street, or inside some of the best eateries in Puglia. This really is the Hub of the region, as it is central to all the other local villages and one of the most lively in the summer. People come for miles, to the music festa's, the art shows, to watch the Ballet in the main square and listen to the Opera's in the local Piazza. You couldn't be in a better place to start your love affair with Puglia.
in The Trullo you will find a full extensive guide on things to see and do in the area
