About Elaine Shannon
I spent most of my working life in Hong Kong and bought up my family there. Before that, I grew up in Lancashire and use to come to the Lake District with my family and I have climbed many of the mountains and fells. Now, although I am a little older and wiser, I continue to enjoy exploring the Lakes and seeing its awe inspiring beauty.
Why Elaine Shannon chose Bowness-on-Windermere
Conveniently located property, nicely decorated and has all you may need
What makes this House unique
This property is located minutes walk away from Bowness and Lake Windermere. Its central, quiet and convenient location will make your exploring much easier. There is a bus to Windermere train station (2 minutes walk away from my home) and on-street parking is available. If you wanted to do some nature exploring, there is a very beautiful walk called the Dales Way. The Dales Way follows mostly riverside paths and you can walk for as long as you like - it goes as far as West Yorkshire (over 80 km away)!

Wonderful stay, wonderful cottage, great location
Absolutely loved our 4 day stay at Glen Brook - the cottage was perfectly equipped for our party of 4 adults, one child and our pup.
Elaine was most welcoming and made sure our visit was comfortable and more than catered for leaving us lots of breakfast essentials plus more.
The property has a fantastic location and is only a short walk from Bowness. Parking is available right on your doorstep and there’s a cute lane round the corner leading to a small park - fab for any four legged visitors! Thankyou so much Elaine for welcoming us to your home - we all highly recommend a visit and won’t hesitate to book again. Even the bank holiday weather was great!
10/10 . Helen & Co.
Our family of five had a superb stay in Bowness. The property is walking distance to the shops and lakes. The kitchen was well stocked. The beds were comfortable and we loved the fluffy white bath towels. Good for the kids to have a bath tub as well as a shower. Elaine was very helpful and informative about local walks.
Perfect location for the lake District
Fantastic location as lots to do/places to eat just a walk away. Wonderful hospitality from Elaine and will definitely go back. Highly recommended.
This is a gorgeous apartment located close to all amenities but far enough away from the bustle. Elaine is a delightful and thoughtful host, passing on lots of recommendations. We had a lovely relaxing time, mostly due to the accommodation. Highly recommended
Warmth and home feel stay
We had two nights in the property. Eliane was patient and helpful. She explained how to travel in Lake District with some history.
I like shopping in Lakeland very much in Kent, however I only got to know from Elaine that it comes from Lake District and the headquarter is still there.
We had a 9 years old boy and very noise, but Elaine was very tolerant.
The kitchen was a bonus as we enjoy eating traditional Chinese food. The rice cooker, woks with lots of Chinese ingredients available are good for Chinese cooking. Two ovens and micwave are good for English cooking. The Washing machine and dish washer are convenient. There are two fans in the bedrooms, however we did not use them, even though in the hottest day so far this year.
Hair dryer, iron and toiletries are available.
We had other 20 members lived in hotels nearby, however, after visiting us, they regretted not getting a homestay like us.
Overall we had a fantastic experience in the 2 floors appartment, very private and secure.
My son disagreed with me while booking, however, he said I was lucky after visiting me in the property.
I will definitely recommend the property to my friends, students and colleagues as it is like your own home and can take 6 people with a living room and dining area. Also Elaine was so friendly and responsible.
Thank you very much to Eliane and her daughter.
Kim from Kent
Had a lovely stay good location
Lovely stay and Elaine was very nice too
It is possible to enjoy the Lake District with and without a car.
For people with a car there are many scenic small roads and some challenging mountain passes; all have amazing views and unforgettable experiences. I'm very happy to recommend specific places to visit to suit individual interests. Even one day exploring Bowness and taking a cruise on the lake is quite magical, but there is plenty more.
For people who don't have car or those who just want to take a break after negotiating the M6, there is an excellent local bus service between Kendal and Keswick and you can jump on and off. Hayes Garden World at Ambleside is very popular, the Gingerbread shop in Grasmere and the spectacular views at Thirlmere on the way to Keswick.
Route 555 to Keswick, 599 to Grasmere
There are also private bus companies that provide fabulous tours:
www.mountain-goat.com or www.englishlakestours.co.uk
Or a cruise on Lake Windermere - www.windermere-lakecruises.co.uk
Within walking distance of the house you can join the famous Dales Way or follow footpaths that will take you to the rambling hills the Lake District is famous for.
Windermere train station is also walkable from/ to the house. By the station there is an excellent supermarket 'Booths' and Lakeland UK - famous for its homeware and kitchenware.
The local bus terminus is in this same area and its a short walk to explore Windermere village which is fullof restaurants and shops. There is also access to Orrest Head - worth the walk - www.walklakes.co.uk.
From the station to my house, its a pleasant stroll down Lake Road from Windermere, but if you follow satnav don't turn left into Craig Walk at the Police Station; it's a steep uphill walk and difficult with suitcases! Continue to Beresford Road, turn left and walk to the junction with Craig Walk No 50 is the 3rd house on the left.
Once you've checked in and ready to explore it is easy to walk to Bowness village. The first thing to notice is the cinema on the right and from this point the Beatrix Potter Attraction is a few minutes away at the bottom of the hill on the right. Shops, restaurants, banks, Tesco's, post office etc., all lead to Bowness Bay where you will find Lake Windermere and access to various boating activities and of course some very special views.
Both drivers and walkers often want to visit the home of Beatrix Potter; Hill Top is at Far Sawrey on the other side of the lake. The ferry for both cars and passengers is located about 0.5 miles along the main road A592 from the Lake Cruise area. The short trip across the lake will take you within 1 mile of Hill Top. On returning to the ferry there are many opportunities to take short hikes along the lake shore - why not try to get as far as Wray Castle!
A few personal favourites to eat:
Homeground in Windermere for breakfast and lunch - closed at 5pm.
Queen's Head in Troutbeck, lunch and dinner (for drivers A592 towards Kirkstone Pass).
