True World Bungalow - a Work of Art Inside and Out

Property Details

Updated: Oct 24, 2016
House, 2 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4-6)

A mile up a dirt road and twenty thousand miles from the cares of the world, the True World Bungalow is perfect for a relaxing getaway. Originally part of the Mojave Rock Ranch Resort, the bungalow is the epitome of “Joshua Tree Style”, in which rustic, artistic and luxury elements combine in unexpected and delightful ways.

As you enter the front gate, you will be greeted by the bottle wall fish pond and blooming water lilies in season. There are private patios in the front and back, perfect for sunrise coffee and sunset cocktails. The bungalow shares a five acre property with the owner’s home, and backs up to over 150 acres of desert wilderness, so you can literally hike out your door and explore a vast landscape of boulders, abandoned claim shacks and wildlife habitat.

The bungalow has two sunny bedrooms (one king, one queen), nicely appointed with down comforters, original artworks, plenty of closet space and views for miles. The custom woodstove (a work of art in itself) will keep you toasty on cool evenings and the sweet retro kitchen is well-equipped with everything you need to prepare a feast. Enjoy complimentary wi-fi, DVDs on the flat screen TV, or music from the CD player (or your iPod). In warm weather you can relax under the trees in the cowboy spa, laze in the hammock, or enjoy air-conditioned comfort indoors. And in every season you can count on star-filled nights, 50 mile views of Mt. San Gorgonio and Mt. San Jacinto and up close and personal encounters with a myriad of desert wildlife.

Joshua Tree National Park Visitors Center is 10 minutes away in the artists’ community of Joshua Tree, where you can also explore the galleries and shops and grab a bite to eat. Please feel free to ask your hosts for suggestions or to arrange special trips, from rock climbing, trail riding, guided hikes and night sky viewing venues to massage, yoga, and spa treatments and visits to local artists' studios.

Our calendar is always kept up to date so you can check availabiltiy before making your inquiry. Please call or email with any questions – we look forward to your visit!

About the Owner

While living in New York, we first discovered Joshua Tree on a side trip after a Las Vegas convention. Business and family moved to Los Angeles and so did we, allowing us to spend many weekends in our beloved desert, just a short drive away. In 1999 we and our friends stayed in the Bungalow of the Mojave Rock Ranch, the resort that defined Joshua Tree Style. When this beautiful little home came on the market in 2003, we bought it (and its five acres) as our own weekend retreat. Three years later we sold our LA home, moved into our Joshua Tree Bungalow and opened the True World Gallery in town. Last year we finished a new home on our property, and we have opened up the Bungalow once again as a rental, renaming it the True World Bungalow.

For us, the desert is the true world -- a place to live in harmony with the environment, and with our wonderful community. We welcome you as our guests, and maybe one day as our neighbors!

Guestbook comments from the owner

From the moment we drove up the driveway and saw the red bungalow, we knew this would be a magical place. What a gift is was to find you through Homeaway and to discover that you are friends with 2 of our favorite people. Wish we could have spend more time with you both (and Brodie!) but the park trumps everything!

Incredible bungalow in the middle of the desert

  • 5 of 5

This bungalow is a must-stay. The whole place was renovated by artists using reclaimed materials found in the area. There are so many fantastic features - everywhere you look there's something great. Well stocked kitchen with facilities and the air condition and climate control is easy to use.

The owners live in a nearby house and were very welcoming and accommodating. It's very remote, so I would recommend coming prepared with your own food etc, although there are markets nearby. It's a short drive (15 minutes) to the Joshua Tree park.

Lovely, quiet and comfortable

  • 5 of 5

This was our second stay in this artistically decorated and comfortable home. We brought our dog this time and he quickly settled down, as did the humans with the very comfortable beds and serene atmosphere, modern bathroom and well-equipped kitchen. The cooling system works well as does the WiFi. We like to eat out on the front patio and relax on the hammock out back. The owners are very gracious and accommodating. We'll definitely be back!

Relaxing and quiet getaway with an artistic eye

  • 5 of 5

My boyfriend and I stayed at True World Bungalow for a getaway weekend from Orange County. We had an amazing visit. Our main goals were to explore JTNP and relax in nature. This is the perfect place to do both. The bungalow is conveniently located a short drive from JTNP entrance, as well as from JT the town, which has a good bar and a good pizza joint, which we took advantage of on our first night. There are also some great antique stores a little up the highway. The residence itself was a wonderful experience. Ecclectic art pieces made it a delight to just walk around the home and the property. The night sky is perfection and the open desert was home to a couple of jack rabbits, a chipmunk?, and numerous birds flitting about. We also made use of the grill and enjoyed making a fire in the furnace. A tie in favorite experience between decor and scenery. Words of wisdom--it is down a dirt road, so I advise making sure of a daylight arrival at least the first time. Also, be grocery prepared as there is not an easy access grocery store near by. All in all a great trip and we would definitely stay again!

Rainy Time In The Desert

  • 4 of 5

Started in Palm Springs in the intense heat and then moved on to Joshua Tree Then it rained and rained ... we went from 97 degrees to 62 and life was more bearable. So two reviews - one, is True World Bungalow which is fabulous. Our accommodations were very comfortable and quite interesting. Lots of art, inside and out - lots of comfort, with a focus on service. So many books and so many dvds, cds - if only we were there longer. The only cons - a longer stay would mean laundry facilities - which were not present. And the dirt road access was tough - and totally doable after the initial attempt. Three miles on a rough road when you do not know where you are going seems like it's insurmountable - then you leave and it is amazingly less of an problem. By the third trip, you are honking slower drivers out of your way.

Joshua Tree - surreal!! Nothing you see in other places can prepare you - the Joshua Trees themselves are amazing and strange - Cholla cacti are scary and weird - and Octallia are just different. It rained while we were here - the whole 3 days off and on. And what a blessing it turned out to be - wildflowers blooming, cooler weather, lovely clouds and mountain pairings for camera buffs. Coming back and hopefully soon!

Owner's Response: We're so glad you enjoyed your stay! The maintenance of the one-mile (not three-mile) stretch of dirt road is currently being addressed by the homeowners and the County of San Bernardino. Hopefully, by the time of your next visit, your ride should be considerably smoother.

We loved our stay at the bungalow. It was comfortable, relaxing, quiet--just what we were looking for. And it had everything we needed aside from our groceries. The decor was beautiful and interesting. We loved it and are already planning on coming back!!

Most magical place

  • 5 of 5

We spend 3 days in the bungalow and we have the most amazing time, Joshua Tree is a short drive away, but the bungalow was just magical at night! You are miles from the city, listening to the wind while you watch the stars making some s'mores in the fire pit. My son had a great time, and our dog enjoy some nice walk right on the backyard. A truly jewel, Bonnie was most helpful as she make sure you have all the info on hand for your stay. Thank you so much!!!
