About Carroll Chisholm
New York City residents who found lakeside property to replenish on weekends during our lives there. And, now, we feel so fortunate to be here full-time and live next door to the rental property.
Carroll Chisholm purchased this House in 1988
Why Carroll Chisholm chose Ellenville
My husband and I are originally from the South and having grown up on water, we wanted a property with water !
What makes this House unique
It's such fun to watch for the various wildlife - beavers, ducks, canada geese, herons, turkeys, turtles, frogs, deer, fox, raccoons, skunks... Each season brings Bliss ! The Spring is a miracle of growth after the snows&ice of winter, summer is oh so wonderfully warm and sometimes even hot ! , the Fall is spectacular with all manner of color of leaves, etc. and the winter is 'Terrible Beauty' ... the snows and ice come and you watch it all happen and stoke the wood burning stove/ cook favorite foods and curl up being oh so cozy. But ... don't get me started about the year-round beauty !

Lovely lakefront cottage to decompress from our year
We had been searching for a replacement for another lakefront cottage that we had stayed in on Cape Cod. Our eyes turned toward the NY Catskills as an alternative. Requirements included more than one bedroom, a decent kitchen, grill, and of course, access to a lake to swim and paddle on.
This cottage fit our needs on multiple levels. It was just over 2 hours away, nestled in a quiet part of the town. Neighboring houses not too close (and even though the owners live on the property, also far enough away from them, too). Boats, grill, nicely stocked kitchen. The water, although from a well, is filtered. And an enclosed porch out front helps to store our beach stuff, or bikes, when it rains. Most of all, the owners made the reservation and check-in process a breeze.
There are 2 canoes, and a rowboat to get out onto the lake. It takes about 20 minutes to get all the way across. We own kayaks back home, and an addition of 2 small kayaks to their "fleet" would be nice. We also took the short paddle in the other direction to look at two beaver lodges. Water birds visit the lake (which is fed from springs and also a dam). It is harder to swim from their side of the lake, but there is a small beach a short ride away, on the other side.
We don't ski, but there are mountains 30-60 minutes away. The owner, John, says that when the lake freezes over in the winter, people ice fish, and it's just beautiful with the ice and snow. From the deck, you can see out onto the wonderful vista of the water.
We have found our calmness away from home. Trust, me, we'll be back to this lovely treasure in the woods!
The house is charming, as is the owners, and the property is perfect. The lake is a perfect lake for swimming and boating - couldn't ask for anything better
Peaceful week in a charming lakeside cottage. Caught lots of fish right outside our door saw beaver, blue heron, and all kinds of birds. Best part of the vacation was meeting Carroll the owner she made us feel like old friends. Would highly recommend vacationing here if your looking for a relaxing vacation.
Great getaway on a beautiful lake
Great location only 2 hours from NYC. We especially enjoyed canoeing around the lake with its beautiful pink water lilies. Lots of beavers if you go for a sunset paddle, we even had one eating water lilies at the edge of the property. Property owner was very responsive and the home home was fully furnished as stated.
Don’t expect wilderness setting because the house is on a street with several neighbors who also access the lake, but for the distance to the city it was perfect.
We had a wonderful time here and the house and property was even better than what we expected! We still talk about it and can’t wait to go back next summer!
Sweet Lake House
The owners were so kind and easy to communicate with. The accommodations are old, but quaint. The lake is poor for fishing and swimming, but the surroundings are quiet and peaceful.
Canoe and rowboat available for your enjoyment. Biking, skiing, fishing - all available only with your own equipment. Rental equipment is NOT available.
