Warm and charming house. Loved all the antiques and books!

  • 5 of 5

Though or trip was not for a vacation or for fun in DC it made our trip more comfortable and less stressful not having to deal with a hotel. It was the perfect place to be after dealing with our flight from Florida which was delayed 5 times and arriving 6 hours late especially since I was transporting my husband's ashes to have a soldiers burial at Arlington Cemetery. The house was warm and charming. It will always be in our family's memory. We would definitely book again it was in walking distance to the metro Eastern Market and restaurants it would be a great place to explore DC and the surrounding area. Thanks again Meg for making our stay comfy and memorable hope to return again ! Sara, Audrey, Nicholas and Sal...

first time we were disappointed renting through VRBO

  • 2 of 5

This is an absolutely beautiful home in a great location! However after renting vacation homes through VRBO on many times this is the first time that we were disappointed. Meg and Tony were easy to work with however we assumed that when we arrived the house and all its amenities would be as described by the listing and by questions we had asked Meg prior to our arrival. Our first problem was that the cell phone listed for Meg was incorrect so on our drive to DC we suddenly realized the number we were given to contact her was invalid. We arrived at the home and sadly the problems just kept adding up. The house had been listed with 4 bedrooms (3 with queen beds and 1 with 2 twin beds), it also listed a microwave, dvd player, AC and an outdoor grill (we inquired about prior to our arrival). Sadly we arrived to find that although we had made our reservations and booked the house 4months in advance that Meg and Tony were not quite prepared. A lot of the amenities listed for the house were incorrect. There were 4 bedrooms but only 2 had queen beds, 1 had 2 twin beds and the last bedroom only has a single twin. (the house is still listed as having beds for 8 people but if you add that up :2 queens and 3 twin beds only gives you beds for 7people). Also the house did not have a microwave, there were tons of dvds to watch but there was no dvd player, the outdoor grill had no propane (and we discovered a rat trap sitting on the grill inside) and most disappointing was that we had no working AC for 4 of the 7 nights that we rented the home!!! In addition to these bigger issues were little things. There was a lot of food left over in the fridge and freezer (not just the basic condiments), we were only given a key for the front door (so we had no back door or back gate key) and upon arrival there were still dirty dishes in the dishwasher from whoever stayed before us. Once we started to bring our problems to Meg and Tony I admit they were quick to try and remedy the problems but they got upset with us quick. To be honest these problems (no AC, no microwave, no dvd player, no working grill, beds listed incorrectly, food left in fridge, dirty dishes in dishwasher, invalid contact # etc) are problems that we did not expect to encounter upon arrival so Meg and Tony scrambling to fix these problems after the fact did not diminish our disappointment. In the end they begrudgingly issued us a refund for less than the amt. of 1 of our 7nights that we rented the home.

Owner's Response: This was also the first time we were disappointed by our renters. I'm not sure anything we could have done would have made the Coombs happy. They complained about everything: the historic indoor farmer's market around the corner and three grocery stores within two miles were not adequate. They wanted a Walmart. And yes, the AC hadn't been serviced for summer. April is generally a chilly-to-cold month in D.C. and our AC has always been serviced in late May. A few days before the Coombs arrival, weather reports showed we were going to have temperatures 20-25 degrees above normal. We called ahead to get the AC man to come ASAP - as did the rest of Washington D.C. The earliest appointment we could get was the following week. (The central air was serviced and is running fine.) We provided the Coombs with fans and offered to buy extra ones. They turned the offer down. The listing did mistakenly include a microwave. We weren't aware of that and offered to buy one and have it set up in the kitchen in 30 minutes. The Coombs turned that offer down, too. We do list three queen beds and two twins. We swapped one of the queen beds for a twin because we often have parties who don't want to share a bed. We still sleep the same amount on the listing, and are playing around with the best configuration. It looks as if we're going back to three queens and will add a third twin. It was unfortunate that there were dirty dishes in the dishwasher. Our cleaning ladies are new and didn't think to check. They were embarrassed by the oversight and won't make the mistake again. Because April temperatures in D.C. are too chilly for outdoor grilling, the gas was not hooked up to the grill. This was rectified within hours of the Coombs complaint. We did take into account that there was unseasonal heat and AC hadn't been serviced for the season, that a microwave was mistakenly listed, and that our new cleaning ladies forgot to check the dishwasher, and refunded $175 to the Coombs. Once we offered them money, their complaints stopped. I have heard about guests who complain with the intention of getting a full or partial refund. I don't know if that was the situation here. I just know we did our best to address their complaints. As you can see from our consistent 5 star reviews, this was not a typical experience for us, nor were the Coombs typical of our VRBO guests.

Excellent

  • 5 of 5

The homes was beautiful and had a thoughtful design through out. Meg and Tony were great really inviting we shared a lot of the same values and dietary ristrictions. With that said I would stay here again in the future and I recommend you stay for a while. One night was not enough I wished I had more time off to relax a few more days. The house was located in a great part of the city making it accessible through all forms of transportation. Meg thanks again my family felt welcomed by your presence and through out our stay in your home.

AWESOME HOUSE!

  • 5 of 5

The house is beautiful. Fully stocked. The description said 3 queen beds and there are only 2, and 2 rooms with 2 twins - for us this was fine as we had 2 couples, 2 children and 1 single adult. Very nice home! It is 3 floors so there are stairs. If you have difficulty with stairs it may not be a good choice for you. Very close to all the museums and such - close to a metro station and the neighborhood has a lot of charm. We are fully enjoying our stay and have been very happy with the house.
