Villa, 5 Bedrooms + Den, 4 Baths, (Sleeps 12)

We started coming to Costa Rica around six years ago, on a surf trip. We loved it so much, and the surfing was so beautiful (for our entire family), and the people so warm, and the land and sea and sky so blissful, we searched for a house of our own, so we could come back over and over again. We found this house in the sweetest little town/village - Esterillos Oeste - which hasn't been overrun by tourism or development. The town boasts two sweet beachfront bar/restaurants. A great 'gourmet' restaurant. A little surf shop. And small market. The tourism is quite limited to those renting beach houses. And the locals (in the water, and out) are about the friendliest people in the world.

The house sits right on the sand. With palm trees out the front door. We've landscaped the place with lush gardens of ginger and orchids and palmettos. There are four huge bedrooms, some with kings, some with queens. Each one, air conditioned. Downstairs there is a full kitchen and a bar area as well as a sitting room with a day bed. There are three bathrooms in the big house. A dining room inside, and a picnic table dining area on the covered patio. Outside, in back is a beautiful pool with separate child wading pool. And a covered rancho with bar and bar-b-q.

One of the nicest parts of the house is the separate bungalow. Just far away and private enough. But still part of the villa. It's own little kitchen, bathroom and one bedroom suite. With sliding glass doors that open onto the pool area.

The whole house is beach friendly. Don't be afraid of tracking sand inside. It's all tile. White and brilliant Azul. We made the house as welcoming and relaxing as we could for our own family and friends. You and yours will love every minute you spend here. There is a local couple - Lydia and Marcos - who care for the house, gardening and cleaning. They are as beautiful as the house is.

Pura Vida. Pure Life. It lives at Casa del Suenos. (House of Dreams)

About the Owner

Our family just finished spending a year, away from our home and work in New York, at this house in Esterillos Oeste. So we had time to do a lot of nice things to it. Lush planting surrounding the house. A new 'deck' on the pool. Rebuilding the lanai over the bar-b-q and bar. Art all over the place. And then practical things like a new water and washing system. Things that make the house feel more beautiful and work a little better. Meanwhile, the place holds the power of 'pura vida' - 'pure life' - that it inherits from the village it lives in. Oeste is just a little paradise. Touched just enough by civilization to have a couple cool beach bars with wondrous people, a little convenience store that doubles as a video rental store, a surf shack with a great teacher (and friend - Brett), and a terrific local restaurant called Alemendos (run by or friend Karen). This is paradise. Great folks. Great surfing. Great food. Great love. Great life. I can't wait until our kid goes off to college, just so we can move back. Stay now, before the house gets lived in full time again.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Our family came to visit us here in CR so we decided to go to the beach for a couple days. This home was perfect for us! The kids spent the whole time swimming in the ocean and in the swimming pool. It was very relaxing and we had a great time! We'll definitely be back.

Great vacations

  • 4 of 5

Everything was great, we had a great week, the house is in front of the beach that's something we appreciate so much, the house is not the far, but far enough to be in a quiet place. The beach was beautiful, not too crowded (as we like it) there are a lot of things to do (surfing, kayaking, sightseeing and many others). The town is really calm.

Now, the house. The house is big enough for 12 people, really comfortable, it has everything you need (kitchen, 4 bathrooms, towels, A/C, etc.) there's a pool and an area to have a BBQ, perfect to spend time with your friends and family.

However, i could've given 5 stars, instead I gave 4, because we faced a few problems with the house, perhaps due to the lack of regular maintenance (nothing serious, but definitely affected us a couple of times). But when we had a problem with the house, Dave would soon be in touch to the find a possible solution.

Perfect

This house was exactly what we were looking for when we decided to surf Costa Rica. The best way for me describe the place was "Off the Grid"; which is exactly what we were looking for. House was very comfortable. The AC in the rooms were great. The pool was fantastic after a long day surfing. Funky little town was great. No tourist, and very friendly people. Felt very safe here. The caretakers, Dave and Wanda were money, and meet us on time, and introduced us to the guy who owned the local surf shop. Great guy and easy to work with. We loved everything about the town, location, and the house. We will definitely be back. Loved it. Well done!!!! This house was as advertised!!!!

Rancho Relaxo

  • 5 of 5

This place does everything a beach house should. It's steps to the sand, lots of space to lounge indoors and a beautiful pool and outdoor entertaining area if you want a break from the sand.

It won't take you long until you're in the groove. Swim, eat, sleep... maybe a couple of sunset cervesas and a bonfire under the stars.

The house is perfectly positioned in a quiet part of the beach, easy walking distance to local shops and restaurants. As keen surfers, we had perfect waves on our doorsteps and had little reason to wander far. We'll definitely be back!

Met all our expectations and more

  • 5 of 5

We were looking for a place to just unwind and relax and this home was perfect. Our biggest desicion was if we wanted to swim in the pool first or the ocean. The beach front setting was just what we needed and listening to the waves at night was awesome. We were able to buy fresh fish right on the beach when the local fisherman came in and cook them right on the grill by the pool. Would definitely return for another stay.

Property was not maintained at standards expected for a vacation home rental

  • 2 of 5

We spent two of our three weeks in Costa Rica at this home. The photos are true to what you find. The garden is amazing. The pool and beach front are absolutely lovely! However the home had MANY frustrating and even hazardous issues. In general, the power goes out a lot in this community and the water sometimes runs brown despite the community achieving a new water rating. Some of the restaurants never seemed to open. Los Alemandros and Brett's surf school were fantastic and so is the Pura Vida Church there! We had no power for the first 24 hours so no air and no refrigeration. Many of the fans are out of balance and noisy. One was fixed while there at our request. Another one finally gave out and threw a metal blade across the room my kids were in. The hot water came out of the faucet scalding resulting in 2nd degree burns covering my husband's hand. There are numerous keys for all the doors and windows - rather than one or even two lock sets. So locking up at night or just to go to the beach across the street is a major process. Some of the window locks stick or do not move. Petty theft in the town left us feeling burdened and uneasy - with warnings from management and experiencing even our children's shoes being taken from the house by the back door. The living room furniture is very uncomfortable. There were cobwebs and gecko poop that weren't cleaned prior to our arrival. The Cabina was musty and had lots of ants when we opened it after we called for help getting the lock to work. During our stay, our baby sitter and children were locked out of the main house because the proper key didn't work and the lock was stuck. The management came to spray the locks and we found ant spray to spray where ants enter but this can be done before paying clients arrive. Part of the stove did not work. Also, if you are renting this house know that toilet paper and trash bags are not regularly supplied. We were given just enough to begin our stay but no replenishment. We bought our own trash bags and TP. Kate, who manages, was wonderful. Kate and Dave responded immediately by having someone come to balance a fan, replace light bulbs that had been out all week, have cleaning done, etc. Lydia and Marcos who come by to clean are wonderful too! It's too bad the issues of the house overshadowed our weeks - we would have loved to spend more of our vacation surfing and enjoying family than wrestling with house related issues.

Owner's Response: We are sorry this guest's experience of our property was not up to her standards, and she has some valid points that are good to be aware of in planning a vacation to Costa Rica. Esterillos Oeste is a small town, and nestled between the pristine beach out front and the protected wildlife estuary to the back. And it's in Central America. Yes, the power can go out and sometimes does, and it's inconvenient, but we can do nothing about that. And yes, sometimes sand gets in the utility water and makes it run a little brown, again, it's part of the package. This is more of an issue in the "rainy season" of May through November, when this guest was visiting, but the rainy season is actually spectacularly beautiful here. We do our best to keep the property well-maintained, and our property managers Dave and Kate are excellent, but salt air breezes and humidity are powerful forces to reckon with in the tropics, and are constantly at battle with ceiling fans, window latches, air conditioners, and any appliances. We agree the keys are a bit of a hassle! But really? It seems no sooner do we get the locks re-keyed than a guest leaves a set somewhere and we have to start over. And the petty crime is just something to be aware of in all of Costa Rica -- in fact, in most of the developing world where the locals have very little opportunity. We really try to take on the ants, geckos, and mustiness that come with the rain and the jungle -- the termite mounds in Costa Rica are as big as dogs! -- but we love the geckos!! Finally, know that there are only a few restaurants in town (a hundred in nearby Hermosa, Jaco, and Herradura), but we look forward to dinner at Almendra's for months before we visit, and could literally eat there every night, but we enjoy preparing meals at home and dining in the outdoor dining area listening to the waves!!

Surf with local greats or get lessons in the village. Fish with the local fisherman, or get aboard a sports charter. Swim in the ocean out the front door, or the in-ground pool in out the back. Laze in the shade of palm trees out in front, or on a chaise in the lush seclusion of the back yard. The separate bungalow makes an ideal 'getaway', or private quarters.
