The Birdhouse at Willard Beach ~ a Maine cottage at the beach

Overview

Property Details

Updated: Jul 13, 2016
3 bedrooms, 1 1/2 baths, sleeps 5

Located 60 steps from Willard Beach in South Portland, Maine, the Birdhouse at Willard Beach is the perfect place to kick back and relax. A comfortable seashore cottage, the Birdhouse has three bedrooms (a queen and a single downstairs and two twins upstairs) and one and a half baths. Furnished in eclectic and informal cottage style, you will find all of the comforts of home.

Willard Beach is a little known gem – a mile long sandy beach just minutes from downtown Portland. With a seasonal beach house with restrooms, snack bar, showers and a playground it is the perfect place to spend a summer’s day. From the house as well as the beach you can enjoy a great view of the islands, Casco Bay and the ship channel. The Birdhouse at Willard Beach is a short walk not only to the beach, but also Willard Square – home of Scratch Bakery and Willard Scoops, a homemade ice cream shop. Also within walking distance are several restaurants, lighthouses, parks and a live theater, and it’s no more than a 10-minute drive across the bridge to downtown Portland.

The Birdhouse at Willard Beach is a fun and informal house with three bedrooms, one bath, and all the amenities you could wish for: Flat screen TV, DVD, Wireless Internet, W&D, gas grill, an outside deck and fenced in yard. We invite you to bring your well behaved dog (with deposit), but must regretfully ask that you leave your cats at home.

The Birdhouse at Willard Beach is available by the week during the summer, and during other times of year with a 3-night minimum. Longer term rentals during the off-season considered by special arrangement.

About the Owner

While we live most of the year in Washington state, we love to spend as much time as we can in Maine, where our sons both live. We frequently drive from coast to coast so our basset hound, Nika, can come with us. Since we cannot be in Maine all the time, we really enjoy sharing our cottage with others when we cannot be there~ and love hearing about what they enjoyed while at the house.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a most memorable Thanksgiving week at the Birdhouse. It was perfect for us. Empty nester Mom, Dad and a 20 lb. cockapoo needed a place to stay to meet and spend Thanksgiving with our daughter's fiancé’s family. The fenced back yard provided secure outdoor space for the pooch for short trips out to relieve himself. This was especially appreciated for the last trip before bed. (no leash, no walk after dark required). The beach provided all the entertainment and exercise all three of us needed. What a place for dogs and what a dog show! (If you are a dog lover who enjoys watching well behaved dogs play, the show we saw should not be missed) Even for non-dog lovers the beach provides plenty for the eye to feast on. Freighters, tugs, ferries etc. headed into/out of Portland pass right in front of the beach a mile or so out. We were able to watch lobsterman haul pots just off the beach. (take binoculars for that). The seascape panorama is magnificent. The house is all that is represented in the publicity and more. We were charmed and looking forward to our next visit. The Birdhouse provided us with a most memorable week in Maine. Susan and Tony run a classy operation! Sign us up again please!

Fantastic property

  • 5 of 5

We keep coming back to this wonderful house that is 1 minute walk from a beautiful sand beach. The property is well-kept, the neighborhood quiet and peaceful, and close to good shops and restaurants. Fantastic kitchen, we also grilled on the deck, and took advantage of being 5 minutes from downtown Portland (Old Port). Can't speak highly enough: clean, well equipped, got notes and calls from the owners making sure everything was just right. Thanks!

Cozy house, great location, very responsive owner

  • 4 of 5

This house is cute, cozy, very well equipped and has the best location. The famous Scratch Baking co. is about 5min walk away (get the sea salt bagel). Dog friendly beach is right around the corner. If you drive for 10min, you will get to Portland downtown area, which has plenty of bar and restaurants. I highly recommend Eventide Oysters and Street & Co., both are amazing but may have long waits.

Susan has been very responsive. She checked on use via call/email when we arrived, and wanted to make sure our stay was comfortable. The reason I’m giving this a 4, not a 5, is because there’s some miscommunication between the cleaner and the owners. I always follow instructions for “check out” from vacation homes, and it’s no exception this time. We cleaned dishes (didn’t dry but put them on drying rack), and also washed a rug that our dog had an accident on. Apparently the cleaner told the owners that there were dirty dishes and rug was dirty, and the condition was less than acceptable. It’s disappointing to hear such comments when we did everything we could before we left the house. I communicated what happened to Susan and she was very understanding.

Additionally, some reviews said there’s a view of ocean from the front porch. Unfortunately we didn’t have any view because the house in front of us had a big RV parked on their lawn and completely blocked any view that we would’ve had. But I think the beach is soooooo close that you can just walk there instead of trying to get a glimpse of it. Also the backyard was cute and had lawn that our dog loved to run on. Overall great experience and we will definitely try to come back.

Birdhouse is Cozy-Comfortable! 6 Stars

  • 5 of 5

Well maintained property in a great location. A stone's throw to the beach, we had a great time (including the dogs). Property owners are very friendly and made our stay feel as if we were right at home. Thank You (Susan & Tony) for everything! We are hoping to come back in the near future.

Great place to stay in Portland!

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed the house and couldn't have been happier with the location. It is a very short walk to the beach and within walking distance of a great bake and coffee shop (which has gluten free items if you inquire). The house is well supplied with everything you need and it is clean and cozy. We would definitely stay here again. Thanks!

The Birdhouse at Willard Beach was cozy and well equipped and just steps to the beach.

  • 5 of 5

We found the house clean, well equipped and very comfortable. It was conveniently located to everything including downtown Portland, restaurants, shopping and just steps to the beach. We really enjoyed seeing the water from the bedroom and the enclosed front porch. Tony and Susan were great to work with and were flexible with our dates when we asked to stay an extra night. We would highly recommend renting this house and thoroughly enjoyed it!

Great House & Location

  • 5 of 5

Overall, this house is pretty great. The location is shockingly close to the beach and the house has all the amenities you could possibly need for a vacation...and they even accepted our tiny terrier.

My wife, and I, wanted a long weekend away before a baby enters our world so we decided to go in February. Of course, sub-zero temps came down upon us, but you would have no idea inside the house; it was extremely warm and comfortable the whole time. As an added bonus, the driveway and sidewalks were kept very clear, even though there is generally ice everywhere this time of year. These are the kind of details you notice when you're in a great place.

As for the inside, the bathroom is nice and updated. The beds are quite comfortable and the backyard was perfect for our dog. The walk to the beach takes maybe a minute, so I'm really looking forward to coming back during the summer when you can be outside for more than 10 minutes.

This home gets high ratings and I would easily recommend this to anyone due to everything above, plus it's only about 10 minutes to get into downtown Portland.

Location

From the Owner

We used to own a house on Peaks Island, and while it was great, we find that we love being on the mainland and watching the ferry go by without having to try to catch it in order to get home! The Willard Beach neighborhood has always been special. We used to bring the boys to the beach when they were small and we lived in Portland (many years ago) - and now they get to come visit it as adults ~ and Nika gets to walk on the best dog beach in southern Maine!

Amenities

From the Owner

How can you not love a house that is steps away from the beach, one of the best bakeries in New England AND a homemade ice cream shop? Previously owned by a lobsterman whose hobby was making unique birdhouses, we fell in love with the cottage as soon as we saw it.
