About Trilby Babin
Austin was home for decades, but in 2001 I fell fast for Aticama, a sleepy and green coastal village full of smiling faces. Loving all the sweet fresh fruit, I planted a garden of my own and now call it home. With the Pacific Ocean at the forefront and the Sierra Madre Mountains as backdrop, wildlife abounds in jungle, air and sea. This region takes birdlife seriously with world-class birding opportunities and a migratory bird festival held annually. Though times are changing, donkeys, dogs, and chickens still stroll the cobbled streets or loll in the shade. Aticama offers visitors a warm embrace and the best of traditional Old Mexico.
Trilby Babin purchased this House in 2007
Why Trilby Babin chose San Blas
Unsurpassed 360° views of the Pacific Ocean, Matanchen Bay, miles of walkable sandy coastline, and tropical jungle with the Sierra Madre Mountains as a backdrop. No big hotels, or overcrowded resorts in this authentic Mexican getaway. Exceptionally long surf break in Matanchen Bay. The mostly low key tranquil village scene of Aticama livens up around festival time with colorful parades, rodeos, dances and crazy fun fireworks shows at the seaside plaza, e.g. Mexican national holidays, Navidad (Christmas), Semana Santa (Easter week), and village feast days. Aticama is a great place to practice your Spanish, locals are friendly and welcoming. Dark skies make for good star gazing. The surrounding property grounds have an amazing variety of native, migratory and neo-tropical birds to see year-round e.g. citroline trogon, scrub euphornias, cinnamon and long-billed hermit hummingbirds, gnatcatchers, whistling ducks, gray hawks, parrotlets, painted buntings, magnificent frigates, groove billed anis, great kiskadees, golden cheeked and pale-billed woodpeckers, vermilion flycatchers, magpie and San Blas jays, chacalacas, caciques and plenty others to add to a bird sighting list. This area takes birdlife seriously! Nayarit is home to an astounding number of bird species. The 2017 San Blas Christmas Bird Count was a total of 285 bird species (10th highest in the world). Falling asleep with fragrant jasmine in the air, waking gently to the lovely sound of the soothing surf or happy wren's song is simply unforgettable.
What makes this House unique
The setting of Casa Babina offers guests an opportunity to experience the endearing Mexico of bygone days from our comfortably modern retreat. For guests less inclined to exploration, there are expansive views from the cliffside vantage point (100 ft/30 mt) above Matanchen Beach. Early mornings you'll see fishermen bringing in their nets. Bird activity is abundant and easy to spot in the surrounding treetops or circling above the property as frigate birds, hawks, pelicans, egrets and the like rise and glide along the thermal updrafts of the cliff below. The historic port city of San Blas is known to surfers and birders—an annual Migratory Bird Festival held in January. Artists, writers, and travelers visit the Matanchen area to escape the hustle of city life.

Love, Love, Love this property.
We had a fabulous time in Aticama. This property is a gem. Trilby is an interesting and delightful person to stay with. We heard at the Sunday market that this is the nicest home in Aticama. From the architecture and furnishings of the home to the stunning garden designs and views this property is a '10'. Thankyou Trilby.

Muchisimas gracias Maria y Adalberto
por su visita. Nos vemos en Baja,, Michoacán o Nayarit!
This beautiful casa is perched high above the Pacific surrounded by mango trees and bursting with exotic colored flowers. The house and property overlook a spectacular view of the coastline, and the distant sound of the surf is always in the background. It's a short drive to several quaint and friendly little towns and only 30 minutes to Tepic for a little more action. And when the yen for an enchilada strikes, a tasty plate of local cuisine can always be found right down the little hill at Lucy's and other home style eateries. The icing on the cake is the lovely and gracious hostess who bent over backwards to make our stay quite perfect. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and recommend it without hesitation.
The perfect world for a visitor to Nayarit. The location is stunning with huge views .
I recommend this place as premiere vacation spot for a person or couple who want a place to really relax and rejuvenate. You have the run of a place, that is isolated and yet in a small sleepy fishing village on the Mexican Riviera of Nayarit. The people are unbelievebly friendly and welcoming. The house is large with lots of different spots where you can spend the morning or evening watching the ocean without ever seeing the home owners. There is a great little pool where you can hang out and get some sun. But if you want to venture out and sightsee Mexico you have at your disposal a great guide who has owned and lived in the house for close to two decades. She knows all of the neighbors and all of the best places to go up and down the coast. She speaks fluent Spanish. In my estimation she makes you feel like your visiting a cousin or someone in your family. Super nice and caring. Every morning there was baked banana bread, fruit and coffee. It was perfect to get the day started. She is exactly who you want to be the owner of your vacation rental.
An exquisite stay!
It would be hard to imagine a more enjoyable experience than my stay at the lovely Casa Babina. The casa itself is magnificent and as comfortable as could be, and the surroundings are simply exquisite. Lush gorgeous tropical flora and fruit trees abound. The view is no less than breathtaking and the proprietress is delightful. I highly recommend this spot for anyone planning a trip to this beautiful region.
Thank you for the kind words, sir! It was a pleasure having you as a guest and I'm tickled that you enjoyed your holiday.
Five-star stay at Casa Babina
As a retired editor for travel and lifestyles for such publications as Resorts & Great Hotels, I found Casa Babina to be one of the most beautiful tropical properties I have ever visited. With dramatic 360° views of the Pacific Ocean, Sierra Madre Mountains, lush gardens, and the village of Aticama, this hilltop retreat is a feast for the eyes and senses. From my private covered terrace I loved looking at the long stretch of Matanchen Bay, especially on Sundays when the locals take to the beach, and the circling frigate birds.
It’s a short walk to the beach where you can eat al fresco at seaside restaurants that serve fresh fish, oysters, shrimp, and lobsters. Stroll through the traditional village where you’ll meet the friendly locals. Be sure to visit the fascinating archaeological museum and the lending library. What you won’t find are bars and nightclubs. However, if that’s on your agenda, head to the little fishing town of San Blas, which is 15 minutes away.
Trilby is a most gracious hostess who will give you complete privacy if you prefer or include you in local activities such a visit to the local farmer’s market or pizza night at quaint Casa Manana hotel. Having lived in Aticama since 2001, Trilby can arrange sightseeing tours such as bird-watching, whale-watching, waterfall hikes, crocodile farm, deep-sea fishing, horse-back riding, and more.
I plan on coming back to Casa Babina every year!
The hilltop location is 100 feet above the ocean with commanding 360° views of the Pacific Ocean, coastline, a symphony of birds, the Sierra Madre Mountains and surrounding countryside. The sleepy seaside village of Aticama and Matanchen Beach are 7-10 minute walk from the house. Aticama is a small welcoming community (pop. 1,400), offering a glimpse into Mexico's bygone days with a refreshingly low key vibe compared to our busy Nayarit neighbors, Sayulita and San Pancho. A picturesque seaside plaza, church, and string of small restaurants serve fresh seafood, tasty Mexican fare and ice cold drinks. Like much of rural Mexico, one can expect unpaved streets and undeveloped infrastructure, a slower pace, infrequent WiFi when out and about, and some litter. Along with the constant sound of the sea, there are frequent - including early morning - sounds of roosters and dogs, occasional festivals, town announcements. Earplugs can be helpful! The wealth in spirit of the people and beauty of nature more than make up for perceived inconveniences, but it is good to arrive with accurate expectations.
Matanchen Beach - one of the longest, widest, sandiest beaches in Mexico - is just below our cliffside home. Kayak and surf board rentals are available on weekends. Stroll the Matanchen Beach pier at twilight for a wonderful coastal vista, with the Sierra Madre Mountains as backdrop.
Yoga and Pilates classes and a weekly community market are held at the Aticama Cultural Center from mid-November into April; private art, yoga and language classes are available. Visit Aticama’s fascinating archaeological museum downtown, located one block southeast of the town plaza.
A vehicle is recommended to fully appreciate the beauty of the Matanchen Bay coast and experience the many day trips, including excursions to El Cora waterfall, the sand beaches of Platanitos, Las Islitas, Borrego, petroglyphs of Alta Vista, coffee and mango plantations, and more. Highways are paved and modern, with occasional speed bumps along local roads. The village of Aticama includes cobbled and unpaved streets. Public transportation is available within 10 minutes walking distance.
The state capital of Nayarit is Tepic (Tepeek) and is quickly accessed by a scenic and modern toll road within 20-25 minutes. Tepic has big chain grocery and department stores such Chedraui, Soriana, Leys, Walmart, Home Depot, etc.
