Come and see what all the Fussen's about
Nestled in the foothills of the Tyrolean Alps, Fussen is a charming town that's known for its ornate historic castles, scenic mountain wilderness, and a lively, walkable downtown. Visitors flock to the city for its old-school Bavarian vibe, and you can find plenty of alpine dining, cozy bars, and traditional shops in the area. To the east of your Fussen vacation rental, the man-made Forggensee lake is a popular destination for boating and fishing, while the mountains south of town offer plenty of opportunities for hiking, camping, and winter sports.
Gratuitous violins in Fussen's historic museums
Once you've taken in Fussen's natural splendor, you'll want to turn your attention to the numerous cultural attractions in and around town. A short drive from your Fussen vacation rental, you tour the grounds and interiors of Neuschwanstein Castle, an ornate hilltop palace built for King Ludwig II during the 19th century. Or you can head to the Fussen Museum, located inside the Benedictine Monastery of Saint Mang. Here, you'll find countless artifacts from throughout the town's history, including a vast collection of stringed instruments from Fussen's days as Europe's premier violin-making region.
Branch out(doors) in scenic, alpine Fussen
With plenty of lakes, rivers, and mountains nearby, Fussen is a nature lover's paradise. Thanks to its location amid the foothills of the Alps, winter sports are a major draw in the area, and Fussen offers cold-weather visitors easy access to the region's ski resorts. During the warm summer months, you'll find plenty of campsites and hiking trails in the area's forests and parks, as well as ample opportunities for sailing, kayaking, and fishing on the nearby Forggensee lake. Driving tours are popular, too, and you'll find a number of worthwhile castles, palaces, and other historic buildings nearby.
Snow far snow good—Fussen's Bavarian climate
Like many of Bavaria's higher-altitude towns, Fussen has a maritime climate, with warm summers and cold winters, with plenty of snowfall and rain throughout the year. Average summer highs peak around 70 degrees in July, while winter highs tend to stay in the 30s between December and February. The snowy winter months are one of the most popular times of year in Fussen, thanks to the wealth of ski resorts in the area. You'll be most likely to find lower prices—and thinner crowds—during the warmer summer months.
Fussen's famous foothills, fields... and the Forggensee
The town of Fussen occupies a fertile valley more than 2,600 feet above sea level. The Lech River runs through the middle of town on its way to Forggensee lake, which makes up Fussen's eastern border. You can find a number of smaller lakes in the region too, as well as several small rivers and streams. Austria's Tyrolean Alps lie directly to the south, and the region is known for its snowy mountainsides and abundance of winter sports. With a Fussen vacation rental, you'll be surrounded by iconic Bavarian scenery, and just a hop, skip, and a jump from Austria.
